Michelle Stuart: "Butterflies and Moths"

Email|Print| Text size + By Cate McQuaid
Globe Correspondent / January 3, 2008

1/3-1/27

Stuart, 74, was making environmentally themed art in the 1960s, and the power of her vision hasn't flagged. Working with beeswax, ink, pigments, and translucent vellum, Stuart has constructed gorgeous butterfly concoctions such as "Variable Cracker II," a silver-speckled specimen with shimmering black and beige wings. The wings' edges fall into a fuzz beneath a layer of vellum; this evokes their beating. These delicate, painterly works read like a collaboration between the spirit of the insect and that of the artist.
