Hoof it to Brighton

Waiting in line at a Brighton club or restaurant might make you feel like you're in a herd of cattle, but did you know Brighton actually used to be crawling with cows? The new Brighton-Allston Heritage Museum exhibit "Bull Market" explores the rise and fall of the New England cattle industry, which was so successful in the 19th century that hotels, train stations, and auctions were set up to accommodate it. The exhibit re-creates an 1800s Market Street with murals, artifacts, a diorama of the city, signs, and photos (at right, a drawing of the Brighton Cattle Market, circa 1850). Today from noon-4 p.m. (through March 28). Free. Brighton-Allston Heritage Museum, 20 Chestnut Hill Ave., Brighton. 617-635-1436. heritagemuseum.blogspot.com
