A clever copycat

Zhang Daqian was perhaps the greatest Chinese artist of the 20th century. He was also a rascal and a forger. Zhang, who died at 84 in 1983, used his extensive knowledge of Chinese art history to create forgeries that made their way into the collections of major museums. "Zhang Daqian: Painter, Collector, Forger," at the Museum of Fine Arts, examines Zhang's colorful legacy through the lens of the museum's own collection. Through Sept. 14. 617-267-9300, mfa.org.

People person

Holly Coulis's paintings (below) read like surreal snapshots: Oddball characters gaze at us from bizarre or unexpected settings. These juxtapositions torque the story, as do bright tones and jarring, jazzy patterns. Her exhibit "Some People" runs through Feb. 8 at LaMontagne Gallery, 555 East 2d St., South Boston. 617-482-8400, lamontagnegallery.com.
