What is it good for?

For centuries, war has been of primary interest to artists. The advent of photography drastically changed the way we think about the specifics of war, but even the "realism" of photography keeps the viewer at a safe distance, its grim details remain an abstraction. Something to ponder at "War Stories." This collaborative show from artists Andrea Geyer, Sharon Hayes, Ashley Hunt, Katya Sander, and David Thorne incorporates video, photos, sculpture, painting, and text to re-create narratives of war. Today 10 a.m.-6 p.m. (show runs through March 12). Sandra and David Bakalar Gallery, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, 621 Huntington Ave., Boston. 617-879-7333. massart.edu
