`Curtains' sets June 29 closing date

NEW YORK—"Curtains," Kander and Ebb's whodunit musical, will bring down its own final curtain in June.

The show will close June 29 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre after playing 511 performances and 26 previews, producer Roger Berlind announced Wednesday.

"Curtains" was one of the last collaborations between composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb, who wrote the scores for such musicals as "Cabaret," "Chicago" and "Kiss of the Spider Woman." Ebb died in 2004.

The murder-mystery musical stars David Hyde Pierce as a detective called in to investigate the murder of a Broadway star who dies during the curtain call of her troubled new show on its opening night in Boston. He won a Tony Award for his performance. The cast also includes Debra Monk as the show's producer.

The book is by Rupert Holmes, who wrote "The Mystery of Edwin Drood." Holmes also wrote additional lyrics for "Curtains," along with Kander. The original book for the show was by Peter Stone, who died in 2003.

"In one of our songs for `Curtains,' Fred wrote `the show must go on,'" Kander said in a statement. "I am so grateful to everyone that made it happen."
