SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—Plans to build a 14-screen movie theater at the Maine Mall are being scrapped.

General Growth Properties has announced it will not redevelop the former Filene's store at the mall into a theater.

Spokesman Jim Graham said the decision to drop plans for the theater was made jointly with Regal Entertainment Group, which was expected to lease the space and run the cinemas. Graham didn't give a reason for the decision, but said the company will now look at other options to fill the Filene's space.

The decision to not build a theater comes soon after a closed movie theater at a nearby shopping center reopened for business.
