Somers man sentenced to prison in furniture scam

BRIDGEPORT, Conn.—A former manager of The Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. has been sentenced to more than two years in prison for a kickback caper that stole more than $875,000 worth of furniture from the company.

Federal prosecutors say 43-year-old Todd Olynciw (OHL-in-chew) of Somers received nearly $396,000 in kickbacks in the scheme, which ran from 1998 to 2005. He oversaw furniture and flooring installation and awarded contracts to renovation firms.

U.S. District Judge Stefan Underhill in Bridgeport sentenced Olynciw to 28 months Wednesday. Olynciw also must pay $876,437 in restitution to the company, forfeit $208,000 to the government and pay the IRS $88,600 in back taxes.

Olynciw pleaded guilty in January to mail fraud and tax evasion. He must report to prison on July 9.

His lawyer Richard Brown says Olynciw is taking responsibility for his crimes and wants to make amends.
