Where the Wilde things are

Email|Print|Single Page| Text size + By Karen Campbell
Globe Correspondent / May 9, 2008

Oscar Wilde's deliciously stylish, witty, and often preposterous satire "The Importance of Being Earnest" follows two bachelors of questionable pedigree as they try to navigate the intolerance and hypocrisy of Victorian high society. As they pretend to be earnest (as well as Ernest, their invented alter egos) to win the hearts of their lady loves, Wilde unfurls scathing societal commentary in the form of a farcical comedy of manners. Spiro Veloudos directs the Lyric Stage Company production, with Ed Hoopman as Jack and Lewis D. Wheeler as Algernon, the dandified stand-in for Wilde himself. Opens tonight at 8 (runs through June 7). $25-$54. Lyric Stage, 140 Clarendon St. 617-585-5678. lyricstage.com
