Jane Smaldone

The New England College of Optometry has decided to start showing art in its building and takes on vision in a new way. For its first exhibit, it will feature works by painter Jane Smaldone. The school says it chose Smaldone because her work is often inspired by St. Lucy, a martyr who refuses to marry a pagan and gouged her own eyes out. Talk about a bad breakup. Not surprisingly, the show is called "Sight for Sore Eyes." The show is up Thursday through June 1. Reception Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. Weekdays 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Free. New England College of Optometry, 424 Beacon St., Boston. 617-587-5664. neco.edu
