Through next Friday at City Hall, you can see an exhibit of work by 81-year-old artist Peter Phelps, who not long ago was being treated for lung cancer by day and living in a homeless shelter at night. The show, "A Life in Color," features surprisingly optimistic and bright-colored paintings of flowers, fish, and other scenery. Later in September, Hearth, an agency that helped Phelps find housing a year ago, will auction off the works to benefit its programs that aim to eliminate elder homelessness. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. City Hall, 617-369-1550. www.hearth-home.org
