At home with the past

"Keepers of Tradition: Art and Folk Heritage in Massachusetts," an exhibition at the National Heritage Museum in Lexington, is modest in size but rich in content. Organized by the state's chief folklorist, Maggie Holtzberg, working in tandem with the museum and the Massachusetts Cultural Council /lh, it features a range of folk art, from duck decoys to tin men and a dazzling Caribbean Carnival costume. Through Feb. 8. 781-861-6559, www.monh.org

Plaid paradise

In "Broken Plaid," Mika Tajima's video projection of plaid wallpaper gradually uproots and crisscrosses itself until it virtually falls off the picture plane onto the floor. This cunning video installation delightfully flouts expectations of form. Through Oct. 12 at the RISD Museum, Providence. 401-454-6500, www.risd.edu/museum.
