Look again
A figurative and religious artist who dealt in allegory, Georges Rouault was a modernist misfit, and the harsh judgments of midcentury critics left his reputation in tatters. But it is hard to imagine a more impressive salvage operation than "Mystic Masque: Semblance and Reality in Georges Rouault, 1871-1958" at Boston College's McMullen Museum of Art. Accompanied by an almost 600-page catalog, the exhibit of about 180 works reveals Rouault to be as difficult to love as ever, but so much more interesting and complex than before. Power in numbers
Jacob El Hanani baffles with the minute intricacy of his work. Drawing mostly in ink, he makes thousands of tiny repeated gestures - the size of a pinhead, sometimes smaller. He fills the paper with them, ultimately creating a topography of wrinkles and waves. The works are humbling to look upon.
