A reporter pursues tawdry truths in 'The Atheist'
- |
NEW YORK—An unrepentant manipulator. A shameless operator. A relentless pursuer of the big story.
Such is the stuff apparently of celebrity journalist Augustine Early, who stops at nothing to get a scandalous scoop. Early, as portrayed by actor Campbell Scott, is front and center in "The Atheist," Ronan Noone's one-man play opening Oct. 12 at the Barrow Street Theatre.
Yet Early's quest for dirt gets more than the subject of his stories into trouble. It also involves himself.
Preview performances for the Culture Project production, in association with Circle in the Square Theatre, begin Oct. 5. That association makes "The Atheist" sort of a family affair. Circle in the Square has had a long history with George C. Scott and Colleen Dewhurst, Campbell Scott's parents.
