Before by-the-sea was added to its name, the coastal town of Manchester was the summer home for Charles Hopkinson (1869-1962), best known as the "dean" of American portrait painters. During his 60-year career, the artist was all over the country in the homes of educators, politicians, and businessmen to paint more than 450 commissioned portraits. Hopkinson also did self-portraits and watercolors, and many of the latter were inspired by ocean views from his Manchester home. "View From the Terrace: The Paintings of Charles Hopkinson" includes paintings from the family collection. Today from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. (Through Oct. 11). $8, $6 students and seniors, free under 12. The Cape Ann Museum, 27 Pleasant St., Gloucester. 978-283-0455. www.capeannmuseum.org
