Reconciling impulses exterior and interior
Afghan women have been weaving rugs for centuries. “Afghanistan: Weaving the Texts of War,’’ a sobering exhibit at the Robert Lehman Art Center at the Brooks School, features 18 handwoven rugs. Most of them were made between 1979 and 1989, the years of the Soviet occupation. The artists, responding to the world around them, studded their designs with military motifs. ...
