Having sat through a recent drive-by, MSM-bashing, we're glad to see New York Times culture editor Sam Sifton's letter to OPERA NEWS. In an April article, the magazine allowed a cranky group of critics to claim that The Times - as well as the entire newsprint universe - has been cutting back on serious arts coverage. Sifton simply pointed out the facts. In The Times, arts coverage gets better placement now than 10 years ago, and more classical music reviews ran in 2005 (472) than in 1996 (331). "The paper's arts coverage has grown larger than it has been at any time in the history of the newspaper," wrote Sifton. "That is the story that should have been reported in OPERA NEWS."
