For Sale: Unwanted MFA Art

Posted by Geoff Edgers May 13, 2006 12:44 AM

The $93 million Picassos make the headlines, but quietly, and for a fraction of that cost, the bold and the beautiful are building their collections. Here’s an interesting twist from Skinner, the Boston-based auction house. Both the recent, May 3 auction and next Friday’s event feature works deaccessioned, or removed from, the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts. That’s kosher, as long as the MFA’s leaders use the cash to buy art of a similar nature. (We have no reason to believe they won’t.) Oh, and Brockton’s Fuller Craft Museum also has works in the May 19 auction.
