Only a few minutes after the Berklee kids stopped playing Thursday night, Keith Lockhart looked across the table to Margo Saulnier, the artistic coordinator of the Pops. Why, he asked out loud, are we shutting down at 11? And before she could answer, he rephrased his question. Why can't we keep it going?

The "it" was the Berklee Jazz Cafe, held in Symphony Hall's Higginson room after John Pizzarelli's set Thursday night. Lockhart's point: Now that the Pops had created something new and hip, couldn't they stay open later?

Within a few minutes, Saulnier had worked out an answer. Yes. On Friday and Saturday, when Jane Monheit headlines the weeklong Boston Pops Jazz Fest, the Jazz Cafe would remain open until 12:30.

Pizzarelli, sitting across the table, laughed and said, "So that's how things get done here."
