Tanglewood Storm

Last Friday, a storm out in the Berkshires left considerable damage at the Boston Symphony Orchestra's summer campus. (The very, very rough estimate of damage is $250,000, for landscaping and damage to Seranak, a building used each summer for teaching and to house Tanglewood Music Center Fellows.) Here's the text of a memo sent around Symphony Hall, and a few photos from the campus.

THE MEMO: "On Friday evening, December 1st, a strong storm came through the Berkshires as part of a cold front. The National Weather Service estimated a straight-line wind shear of 85 mph. It seems Lenox took the brunt of the storm. Seranak had considerable damage to the trees and some damage to the buildings. It is estimated that between 200-300 trees are either down or damaged. The pines along the drive to Seranak, near the parking area, and the trees surrounding the building were all but destroyed. There was also significant damage to the trees around the caretaker’s cottage at the bottom of the Seranak drive. The main Tanglewood grounds were also affected, with electrical services lines down throughout the campus and tree damage in many locations. The tree damage on the Tanglewood grounds was not as severe as at Seranak, and no buildings were damaged."
