Looking For Romance? Try The BSO.
Every once in a while, I wonder if Mark Volpe, the Boston Symphony Orchestra's managing director, regrets this 2005 quote in a New York Times article.
"The gimmicks don't work. I don't think an orchestra can really be a dating service."
Just for context, the story, by Dan Wakin, was basically about how many orchestras were "adopting a wide array of methods, from the trivial to the thoughtful, to bring more people into the concert hall."
I think of Volpe's quote because, next week, a party in New York will kick off the BSO's second "Entanglements" program set for Tanglewood. And just what is "Entanglements"?
According to the party invite, it's "a program designed to expose younger people to the romantic magic that a concert experience at Tanglewood in the Berkshires can produce."
But there's more...
"What are you looking for this summer? Something Different! Something Magical! Connection! ROMANCE!!!"
That's right. For just $12, you can potentially meet somebody who might be up for making out to some Milton Babbitt. Mojitos for everyone!
