The former Metropolitan Museum director, and sometime hunter of art fakes, e-mailed me this theory about what he calls the Matter "experimentals."

"Gene Thaw of the Foundation saw seven or eight differing hands in the Matter stuff. Was Matter an art teacher? Could his students have experimented? I know when I was at the Art Students League when I was training to become a serious painter all students had to make a Pollock and a Kline and a Motherwell to see what the "spirit" of abstract expressionism was.

Maybe someone will find my two (I used hypodermic needles and really turpentined out oils) and will sell 'em for BIG BUCKS!"
