Christoph Writes!

Posted by Geoff Edgers September 25, 2007 08:59 PM

I sent Christoph Büchel an e-mail request for an interview a few hours ago, knowing he has never agreed to talk with me and has been quite unhappy with our coverage. But alas, Büchel did respond. Here's the e-mail, in total.

"In return to MASS MoCA's decision not to show the unfinished and altered project Training Ground for Democracy, I donate following permanent installation to the museum, that will be within its reasonable budget, since there are no costs involved: Exchange the letters "M" and "C" of the word "MoCA" on the roof of the museum, as shown in the picture below."

  1. Something tells me Mass MoCA would like to install something in Christoph Büchel, too.

  1. har har.

do a google image search for "christoph buchel".... use the quotation marks, it's funnier that way.

i'm sure christoph would get a kick out of it.

  1. I have sympathy for his cause. A little, mainly because I fear the precedent the judge's decision sets. But MASS MoCA is a pretty accomodating institution and has showcased some of the most interesting art one can see in the US. Buchel looks like a petulant teenager.

  1. As an artist I offer "Training Ground For Christoph Buchel"
as a work of art to the artist, and it consist of him attending the child nursery next to my home.

  1. The entire incident saddens me.

A courageous contemporary art institution is made to look foolish and mean-spirited, a terrific artist nows seems churlish, and a public only too willing to believe that contemporary art is just an exercise in nihilism is provided with what seems to be irrefutable proof. The truth is that Mass Moca is a remarkable place run by dedicated, intelligent and quite serious professionals. Christoph Buchel is a very good artist who will continue to make important work. Both have learned valuable lessons from this failed project, but we can only hope that neither party will in the future shy away from taking risks or pushing at the edges of what seems possible, practical or politically expedient. Then, and only then, would all this constitute a true failure.
