Council Releases Citi Center Money

The Massachusetts Cultural Council voted this week to release a $60,400 grant to the Citi Performing Arts Center that had been tabled last year after questions were raised about the Citi Center's cutbacks to its free Shakespeare on the Common program and its decision to pay a $1.2 million bonus to its president and chief operating officer, Josiah Spaulding Jr., despite the organization's financial struggles.

  1. While three million dollars is a huge retention bonus, Montebello did a fantastic job at the helm of the Met. If any director of a U.S. cultural institution deserves such huge compensation it would be him. The premier U.S. art museum has entrance by suggested donation with no extra charge for blockbuster exhibits. He has raised a tremendous amount of money, which after all is an essential function of his position.

Josiah Spaulding Jr. does not deserve any retention bonus at all. What has he done for Citi Center or the cultural richness of Boston? This season the Celebrity Series was not even allowed use of the hall for dance venues. If we are going to shower directors of cultural institutions with huge sums of money, let's reserve it for those who have done an outstanding job.
