Not to dismiss anyone's genuine emotional response to this song, but I've often suspected that its recent ubiquity might be due to the deal LC made with one of the big music publishing companies (I want to say Sony Music but I'm not positive).
Cohen recieved a rather large advance of royalties (which he referred to as his "retirement plan") in exchange for ownership of copyrights and publishing rights, an investment I'm sure Sony (or whoever) is eager to recoup.
Sadly Leonard's management help themselves to a big chunk of the money, so he's not as comfortable as the last quotegiver might hope, and even has to go back on the road.
