Museum of Fine Arts, acquires African American art.
The MFA bought three paintings from a Swann Galleries auction, including Norman Lewis's Untitled (about 1960-1964) for $312,000, which the museum says is the highest price ever realized at auction for an abstract work by an African-American artist. The museum also bought The Juggler #1 (about 1964) by Hughie Lee-Smith and 715 Washington Street (1947) by Walter Simon.
This is all part of an acquisition process aimed for when the MFA moved into the new American Wing and the Linde Family Wing for Contemporary Art in late 2010.
