There's a major exit on the Boston art scene. Nicholas Baume, the Institute of Contemporary Art's chief curator, is heading to New York to serve as the director of the Public Art Fund. According to Carol Vogel's column today, he'll start in September.

Earlier this year, Bill Arning left the MIT List Visual Arts Center to take over the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston. And the Museum of Fine Arts is still looking for a curator of contemporary art to replace Cheryl Brutvan. Baume's decision, coming just as some say the ICA has been hitting its stride with its recent exhibitions, will leave another hole on the local contemporary art scene.

An ICA spokesperson said this morning that a search has started for his replacement and that the ICA learned of Baume's decision earlier this week.

Baume, 44, was hired by the ICA in 2003 after serving as contemporary curator at Hartford's Wadsworth Atheneum. He replaced Jessica Morgan, who took a post as a curator at London's Tate Modern.
