Word out of Salem is that the Peabody Essex Museum, struggling with a decreasing endowment and reductions in donations, has had to lay-off 16 staffers. (The PEM still has 248 people on staff.)

I'll be looking for more details, but a PEM spokesperson says that the cuts came across the museum without stating specifically who and what positions.

The museum is just the latest to make cutbacks. Earlier in the year, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum laid off 12 people, dismissing several secretaries, conservation staff members, and a painting curator. The Museum of Fine Arts laid off 33 workers, about four percent of its staff, and froze salaries across the board.
