Space 242 closing for now
Say goodbye to another Boston art gallery, but only for a little while, according to Space 242’s director Ami Bennitt. The gallery, named for its street number on East Berkeley Street, is going on hiatus because of a series of break-ins. Bennitt worries that the art, so far untouched, will be taken or damaged. The gallery, which has shared a floor with the Weekly Dig until recently, has been broken into four times since Memorial Day, most recently last night. An earlier robbery cost the Dig nearly $20,000 of lost computer and photo equipment. Last night’s booty was considerably less impressive: Change and two bottles of champagne, according to Dig boss Jeff Lawrence.
The break-ins have left Bennitt unnerved, but she pledges to reopen. “Whether it’s there or whether the programming goes to another space or whether they catch the people, I don’t know,” she said.
The gallery, which is owned by Lawrence and has featured Skunk, Joe Keinberger, Mister Reusch and Jennifer Lewis in exhibitions, has been open since January of 2008.
