JOHN BULL'S OTHER ISLAND
George Bernard ShawThe story of two friends, one the most English of Englishmen, the other the most Irish of the Irish. They move to an estate in Ireland. The Englishman adores everything and everybody Irish. The other hates everything and everybody Irish. Well, not quite everybody. Of course, "John Bull" is England and "The Other Island" is Ireland. At a party, on my first night in America, I gave the speech of the Irishman, on the Irish weather, from that play. Suffice to say that within 15 minutes the guests had all gone home. I never met any of them during my stay with my friends in Larchmont.
At right, a portrait of George Bernard Shaw by Yousuf Karsh.
