THE SHAUGHRAUN
Dion BoucicaultA romantic, adventurous, funny, elaborate but never boring melodrama from the pen of the greatest, most successful playwright in that genre. The hero is an Irish Robin Hood and a half! The Abbey Theatre was founded to get away from that exaggerated drama. It was the Abbey in 1960 that revived "The Shaughraun" with the great Cyril Cusack re-creating the title role so brilliantly for The Abbey, then taking it to Aldwych Theatre for The Festival of London, which it took by storm. This led directly to the Royal Shakespeare Company "rediscovering" Boucicault and taking him to the world, again!
Here, the 1998 version at The Irish Repertory Theater in New York.
