WAITING FOR GODOT
Samuel BeckettFunny and disturbing. The first Dublin performance, and the second in English in the world, was at The Pike Theatre. It started at 11 p.m after other shows were out. I was lucky enough to be there. I loved it. In the decades that have followed, I have come to believe it is the most perfect metaphor of life on earth in the history of theater. To my ear, Beckett was writing for actors who understood and could speak with Dublin accents. When I produced it at Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival in Ohio, directed by an Irish actor, with American actors, I had a letter from a former supporter calling me "the devil incarnate."
