Wilfred 10 and 10:30 p.m., FX

Here’s why we call them the dog days of summer. I love this often clever cult comedy, which returns for a third season with a pair of back-to-back episodes. It’s a buddy series about a man, played by Elijah Wood, and a dog, played by the sharp Jason Gann in a ridiculous dog suit. The dog leads the risk-averse man into trouble, which is a good thing. There’s an extra layer of humor in the writing for viewers who know dogs.

Hannibal 10 p.m., NBC

This series has a few very enthusiastic fans – enough, in fact, to inspire the desperate NBC to renew the series despite the horrible ratings that bring in only about 2 million viewers a week.
