The trailer for “Girl Meets World” is sickeningly sweet. We’re talking a doughnut—covered in Pixi Stix—dunked in Swiss Miss—sweet. So sweet it makes our heads hurt.
Part of the magic of “Boy Meets World” was the relatable nature of the coming-of-age story that it told. Cory (Ben Savage), Topanga (Danielle Fishel), and Shawn (Rider Strong) got into all kinds of trouble, were counseled by elders (mostly Cory’s parents and Mr. Fee-hee-hee-nay), grew into mature, college-attending adults, and took us on a believable journey with them.
“Girl Meets World” looks more like a Hannah Montana-esque take on Cory and Topanga’s continued romance, evolved to focus on their tweenaged daughter, Riley.
Disney Channel released a clip of the show today featuring what looks like an overprotective Cory (surprise) as he stops Riley from sneaking out of their apartment via a fire escape at her bedroom window.
If it were “Boy Meets World,” Cory and Shawn would have slipped down the tree in the Matthews’ backyard and family patriarch Alan would have let them go — after some coaxing by wife, Amy. Mayhem may have ensued, but it would have been fun to watch and taught a lesson to boot.
The gag-alicious icing on the trailer cake is in the dialogue:
Riley: How long do I have to live in my father’s world?
Cory: Until you make it yours.
Riley: When I do will you still be there for me?
Topanga: Right here.
Bring back Mr. Turner and Shawn.
