Chappelle gets a serious deal

Dave Chappelle has signed a lucrative deal with Comedy Central that will return his hit series to the network for two more seasons.

Sources familiar with the agreement indicate that it could be worth about $50 million, and that it would vault Chappelle into the rarefied realm of television's top earners. The new contract is believed not only to mark a steep increase for Chappelle as star, writer, coexecutive producer, and cocreator of "Chappelle's Show," but also reward him with a hefty chunk of robust DVD sales.

Increasing the pressure on Comedy Central to close a big deal with Chappelle was interest from other programmers, including, sources said, the NBC Universal Television Group president, Jeff Zucker, who deemed Chappelle too expensive. FX is said to have made an eight-figure offer.

The deal also has implications beyond Comedy Central for Chappelle within the parent company, Viacom, sources said. Another component sets up Chappelle with a deal at Paramount Pictures to star in an adaptation of the autobiography of Rick James, the singer whom Chappelle has lampooned on "Chappelle's Show." He may also be tapped for a different film project.

Chappelle, who is vacationing in Paris, could not be reached.
