A night to go subtle, strapless

There was less glitz, but plenty of glamour at last night's Emmys. The gowns were long, often strapless, and understated. Even the ''Desperate Housewives" quintet, which appeared to present an award, chose colors that seemed to work together, a wash of purple, dark green, and pink. Just as at the Oscars, you had the feeling that celebrity outfitters worked to keep stars from dangerous choices. Those actresses who selected bursts of color kept it simple, with gentle details. The quieter tone applied to men, too, who paired dark shirts with their tuxedos.
