Adapted from a Raymond Carver story by the gifted Australian director Ray Lawrence, this muted drama is a mish-mash but an interesting one. Laura Linney and Gabriel Byrne play a back-country couple torn apart over his discovery during a fishing trip of a dead girl's body. The domestic scenes are powerful, the film's attempts to deal with Australia's racial legacy less so. (R through Jan. 17) - Ty Burr
