9 p.m., History Channel

Like Alan Weisman's best seller "The World Without Us," this documentary portrays what would happen to the Earth if humans weren't here anymore. Using both interviews with experts and visual effects, the two-hour special gives us a planet where abandoned skyscrapers have become "vertical ecosystems" complete with birds, rodents and plant life.

ON DEMAND
Repo Man
Comcast

Fresh, funny, and funky, Alex Cox's darkly humorous portrait of LA is a mix of manic car repossessors, New Wave sci-fi, mindless consumerism, and punk alienation. Harry Dean Stanton, the veteran repossession (or "repo") man, suggests a hatchet blade on speed. Emilio Estevez (above), his protege, is sweetly hot-wired. (R; runs on Encore through Jan. 24 )

American Idealist: The Story of Sargent Shriver
10 p.m., Channel 2

Sargent Shriver (above in 1961) is married to Eunice Kennedy, of course, but this documentary focuses on his accomplishments as an important figure in the Peace Corps, VISTA, Community Action, Head Start, the Special Olympics, Job Corps, and other social programs and organizations. Now 92, Shriver, who was the 1972 vice presidential candidate, suffers from Alzheimer's. The film was executive produced by his daughter, Maria Shriver.
