This documentary looks at Fleiss's efforts to start a legal brothel for women — a stud farm — in the small desert town. She meets with local resistance, she befriends a former madam, and she inherits an exotic bird collection. The film is directed by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato.

Bette Midler, as a brassy troop entertainer full of heart and voice, almost carries this film spanning 50 years through its thin formula plot and sludgy texture. But even she can't remedy the fact that there's not much chemistry between her and her partner, James Caan. (R; runs through July 31)
