The Savages
A lovely, humane comic drama about two middle-aged siblings (Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney,) coping with their father's (Philip Bosco) decline. Writer-director Tamara Jenkins mines the awfulness of failing parents and faded hopes for tiny, connective bits of truth and humor; the movie's a downbeat upper, and the cast performs miracles with no wasted gestures. Shame about the too-neat ending, though. (R; runs through Oct. 25) - Ty Burr
