CAR 54, WHERE ARE YOU?
(Encore on Comcast) In this slapstick updating of the ’60s TV sitcom, David Johansen leads an excellent cast as the cheery but bumbling Officer Toody, with John C. McGinley outstanding as the uptight Officer Muldoon. Al Lewis as a retiring cop, Fran Drescher as a cop groupie, Rosie O’Donnell as Mrs. Toody, Jeremy Piven as a witness-under-wraps, and Daniel Baldwin as a mob boss are also fine. But the gag-loaded movie is like eating a bag of trick-or-treat candy: A sweet, multicolored rush eventually spins into sugar shock. (PG-13; runs through July 16)
NEVER BACK DOWN
(Starz on Comcast) Call this preposterous, semi-eroticized martial-arts high-school drama “The Karate Kid’’ for MySpace cadets. Call it “Teen Fight Club.’’ Call it “So You Think You Can Brawl.’’ While you’re noticing how it’s just like a bunch of other movies and reality shows, it’s worth singling it out for courageously showing what young males really want: popularity. High-school boys are the new high-school girls. With Djimon Hounsou as the movie’s Mr. Miyagi. (PG-13; runs through July 16)
