E.T., THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL
(MAX on Comcast) A classic family film in the tradition of “The Wizard of Oz’’ and “Star Wars.’’ Steven Spielberg established himself as the Hans Christian Andersen of the movies with this fantasy tale about a boy befriending an extraterrestrial. (PG; runs through Aug. 13)

DIVINE SECRETS OF THE YA-YA SISTERHOOD
(MAX on Comcast) An uneasy mix of molasses-thick melodrama and ribald jokes, this adaptation of the much-beloved Rebecca Wells novel, starring Sandra Bullock, Ashley Judd, Ellen Burstyn, and James Garner, still somehow exudes warmth and charm behind its crooked smile. Sure, it’s contrived and predictable, but there are enough well-tuned performances to make it winning. (PG-13; runs through Aug. 13) RENEE GRAHAM

ABSOLUTE POWER
(Starz on Comcast) Not top-drawer Clint Eastwood, but not bad, either, as he wryly and slyly plays a thief who brings a lot of firepower down on his head when he interrupts a burglary to witness an ugly crime connected to the White House. (R; runs through Aug. 13)
