REVOLUTIONARY ROAD
(Comcast Movies and Events) “American Beauty’’ director Sam Mendes returns to probe suburban angst, with a great novel (by Richard Yates) at his back. Kate Winslet (Mrs. Mendes) is excellent as a desperate late-’50s housewife; Leonardo DiCaprio flounders as her callow husband. (R; runs through Oct. 31) TY BURR

DEFIANCE
(Comcast Movies and Events) Jewish brothers in WWII Belorussia fight the Germans while building a forest city of refugees. Edward Zwick’s true-story warhorse is mired in the mawkish language of Hollywood historical dramas. In accented English and Russian, with subtitles. (R; runs through Nov. 26) TY BURR

HOTEL FOR DOGS
(Comcast Movies and Events) Agreeable Saturday afternoon multiplex piffle - friendly, formulaic, harmless. A pair of orphans fill an abandoned hotel with dozens of strays; grown-ups run interference. The dogs are allowed to be dogs and there’s a nice adopt-a-shelter-dog message. Good boy. (PG; runs through Nov. 30)
