When known actors and actresses do guest turns on the procedurals, I often groan. They tend to seriously overact. Did you happen to see Eric McCormack’s turn on “SVU’’ a few weeks ago? Or Erika Christensen on “Lie to Me’’? Wow. Tonight, Scott Foley (above) guests as an alcoholic who wakes up with a dead woman. Good luck to him.
Modern Family 9 p.m., Channel 5
Fingers crossed. This winning new comedy is bringing on guest star Shelley Long as Claire and Mitchell’s mother - that would be the Ed O’Neill character’s ex-wife. I tend to like Long, and she’s good in the commercials for the episode, when she goes off at her ex’s new wife, Gloria (Sofia Vergara), and calls her Charo. This could be great casting, or grating casting. We’ll see. Pictured: Long with Jesse Tyler Ferguson.
