INSIDE MAN
(Comcast Movies and Events) Probably the most purely enjoyable Spike Lee Joint ever. Clive Owen pulls an elaborate bank robbery that Detective Denzel Washington has to foil. The story is elemental, but because Lee and screenwriter Russell Gewirtz invest it with grit, comedy, and a ton of New York ethnic personality, it’s fresh anyway. Both Washington and Jodie Foster, who plays a power-brokering glamourpuss, seem invigorated. Pictured: Washington (left) with Owen. (R; runs through Nov. 13) WESLEY MORRIS

MALCOLM X
(Comcast Movies and Events) Spike Lee has made a wonderfully American movie about that most American of pursuits, self-reinvention. And Denzel Washington is magnificent as the black hero who went wherever his search for truth and his fight against racism took him. (PG-13; runs through Nov. 13)

MO’ BETTER BLUES
(Comcast Movies and Events) Spike Lee has trouble slowing down and Denzel Washington has trouble speeding up in this rich-looking and emotionally generous but also wildly uneven outing about a selfish jazz trumpeter who learns some hard lessons. (R; runs through Nov. 13)
