KIT KITTREDGE: AN AMERICAN GIRL
(HBO on Comcast) The first “American Girls’’ movie is so warmly old-fashioned that it feels brand new. Abigail Breslin (above) smacks of gingham and Ovaltine as the title character, a 1934 kid weathering the Depression with friends and family (G; runs through Nov. 16) TY BURR

EVOLUTION
(HBO on Comcast) It’s ponderous and it often plays like a screenful of borrowed parts (“War of the Worlds,’’ “The Blob,’’ and especially “Ghostbusters’’), but this comedy about rapidly evolving alien matter bent on world domination has its low-comedy moments. David Duchovny and Julianne Moore star. (PG-13; runs through Nov. 16)

SHOOT ’EM UP
(HBO on Comcast) A gleefully sleazy action movie that pits a mysterious Man With No Name (Clive Owen) against a sadistic nerd of a hit man (Paul Giamatti) for possession of a dead woman’s newborn baby. Written and directed by Michael Davis, the movie exists for its outrageous stuntwork, ghoulish black humor, and boys-only party vibe. Extremely clever without actually being smart, it’s still good vile fun if you’re in the proper mood. (R; runs through Nov. 16) TY BURR
