MORTAL THOUGHTS
(Comcast Free Movies) Half black comedy, half thriller, this refreshingly impossible-to-pigeonhole outing is powered by terrific performances from Glenne Headly and Demi Moore (above, from left) as New Jersey beauticians and lifelong pals who decide that Headly’s abusive husband - played by Bruce Willis - has to go. (R; runs through Dec. 1)

DEFENDING YOUR LIFE
(Encore on Comcast) Is depression the only sane reaction to contemporary life - even in heaven? It is when heaven turns out to be a replica of Southern California. Even though the fun flattens out, it’s refreshing to note that Albert Brooks’s comedy still seems idiosyncratic, even though this was a 1991 release. (PG; runs through Dec. 3)

PHENOMENON
(Encore on Comcast) John Travolta plays a soft-spoken nice guy, an auto mechanic in Northern California, who has a close encounter with a white light from outer space. Then he becomes a genius, and the movie is too slow to figure out what to do with him. Kyra Sedgwick and Forest Whitaker give strong supporting performances. (PG; runs through Dec. 3)
