FORREST GUMP
(Comcast Movies: All Movies) Tom Hanks (above) as an American innocent, hurtling through three decades of turbulent history, almost sunk by his own sincerity, but remaining pure. It’s a virtuosic balancing act he pulls off, making simplicity not only convincing but appealing. Computerized special effects repeatedly place him alongside the likes of JFK and John Lennon, but never get in the way of the story’s main business - personifying American decency and optimism and keeping it alive. (PG-13; runs through Jan. 4)

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS
(Comcast Movies: All Movies) Jodie Foster, behind the camera in her second film as a director, seems to be aiming for sitcom in this comedy about Holly Hunter carrying a huge load of dread back to her dysfunctional family for Thanksgiving. But the film gambles by going after deeper feelings - and wins by nailing them. (PG-13; runs through Jan. 4)

JUST FRIENDS
(Comcast Movies: All Movies) Funnier than any low-rent rip-off of “There’s Something About Mary’’ has a right to be. Ryan Reynolds, still cruising on snark appeal, plays a former high school fatty who comes home to prove he’s no longer in Amy Smart’s “friend zone.’’ A slovenly, unsophisticated, cheerful throwback to ’80s teen comedies like “Better Off Dead,’’ it’s stolen by Anna Faris as a hellacious Courtney Love-style pop star. (PG-13; runs through Jan. 4) TY BURR
