SHUTTER ISLAND
(Comcast Movies: All Movies) Martin Scorsese proves susceptible to the chic of filming a Dennis Lehane bestseller. It’s an inspired extraction though not a terribly satisfying one. The mood, though, is eerie, and the supporting cast — including Ben Kingsley, Mark Ruffalo, and Patricia Clarkson — is excellent. (R; runs through Sept. 26) WESLEY MORRIS

LEGION
(Comcast Movies: All Movies) Paul Bettany is an angel defiantly determined to protect diner waitress Adrianne Palicki and her unborn messiah-to-be from the apocalypse. For the surprising amount of time the movie spends trying to dimensionalize an ensemble that includes Dennis Quaid, Lucas Black, and others, they are as implausibly shockproof as in any other doomsday flick. (R; runs through Sept. 10) TOM RUSSO

ALICE IN WONDERLAND
(Comcast Movies: All Movies) A disappointment. There’s nothing wrong with a revisionist “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,’’ but Tim Burton’s 3-D version ultimately looks like every other CGI action-fantasy epic out there, despite a few goth touches. Johnny Depp is fun but overindulged as the Mad Hatter; Mia Wasikowska’s charming adolescent Alice gets lost under the sub-“Narnia’’ mayhem. The movie’s not insane, and that hurts. (PG; runs through Oct. 17) TY BURR
