The Big Bang Theory 8 p.m., Channel 4

Did CBS make a big mistake by moving this Monday night hit to Thursday? In short, absolutely not. It got about 14 million viewers, which is better than what “Survivor’’ got in the same spot last year. That number is also better than what “The Big Bang Theory’’ got for its season premiere in its old home. Indeed, CBS was the ratings winner for all of premiere week. The network keeps it old school, with procedurals such as “CSI’’ and multicamera comedies such as “$#*! My Dad Says,’’ and it comes out on top. Pictured: Jim Parsons and Kaley Cuoco in “Big Bang Theory.’’

The Mentalist 10 p.m., Channel 4

The show introduces a new, potentially recurring character tonight. Danny is the con-man brother of Patrick Jane’s late wife, and he blames Jane for his sister’s murder by Red John. I mention it here because “Friday Night Lights’’ fans will recognize the actor who plays Danny — it’s Kevin Rankin, who did such a memorable, inspiring turn as Herc, Jason Street’s friend in a wheelchair.
