THE SHINING
(Comcast Movies: All Movies) Jack Nicholson stars in what is not only a provocative terror film but also one of our most fascinating films. Director Stanley Kubrick deliberately pulls his dramatic punches and creates a tension even more palpable than if he had delivered them. (R; runs through Nov. 1)

SEVEN
(Comcast Movies: All Movies) Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt as homicide detectives pursuing a cunning murderer whose serial killings are themed to the Seven Deadly Sins. This isn’t “Cops.’’ It’s a lot closer to “Silence of the Lambs.’’ The gruesome killings are depicted in all their bloody aftermath in dark, jolting fashion. (R; runs through Nov. 1)

SCREAM 2
(Comcast Movies: All Movies) Clever, at times even witty copycat sequel. Neve Campbell, Jamie Kennedy, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox are the returnees in this film packed with audience-flattering pop-culture references and inside-showbiz title-dropping. The visceral thrills wear off as the sameness of the body-count stuff sets in, but it is fun to watch director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson up the self-referential ante. (R; runs through Nov. 1)
